What is a Folly?
A folly is an ornamental structure whose creation reflects a whimsical inclination on the part of the builder.
Built primarily to be viewed as part of the scenery, it is a European invention. At the height of their popularity in the 18th and 19th centuries, folly buildings were based on the picturesque ruins of Italy, Greece and Turkey.
Forgotten temples, pyramids and ruins viewed by tourists on the Grand Tour would then be reproduced in their own gardens and landscapes. It was a deliberate attempt to recreate a scene from antiquity — a tribute to what was thought to be a more ideal and idyllic way of life. [more...]
